Understanding goal statuses and approval process
Each goal has a status that says where it is in its lifecycle.
Goal statuses
The following table describes the goal statuses:
| Status | Definition |
|---|---|
| Draft | The goal has been saved but not published yet. Only its creator can see and edit it. |
| Pending approval | The goal has been published and is waiting for the approval of the manager of its owner. The manager can approve or reject it. |
| In progress | The goal is active. Its owner can update its progress and, when its outcomes are reached, mark it as done. |
| Rejected | The manager has rejected the goal, optionally with a comment. The owner can edit the goal and submit it again for approval. |
| Completed | The goal has been marked as done. It can no longer be updated. If the goal type allows it, the goal can be reopened, which moves it back to In progress. |
Approval process
When a goal is published, it is sent to the manager of its owner for approval if all the following conditions are met:
The goal type requires goal approval.
The owner created the goal for themselves.
The owner has a manager.
Otherwise, the goal moves directly to In progress. This is the case, for example, when a manager creates a goal for a team member. Organizational goals do not go through the approval process.
If the manager approves the goal, it moves to In progress. If the manager rejects it, it moves to Rejected, and the owner can edit it and click Submit again for approval. For more information, refer to Approving a goal and Editing a goal.
Completing a goal
When the outcomes of a goal are reached, its owner can mark it as done. Then, the goal immediately moves to Completed, and no approval is required. See Marking a goal as done and Reopening a goal for details.
